What Is the Market Development Grant MDG?
The MATRADE Market Development Grant is one of the most useful export support programmes for Malaysian businesses that want to enter new markets, attend international trade events, and promote Malaysia products overseas. Officially known as the Market Development Grant (MDG), it is managed by MATRADE, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, and is designed to support eligible export promotion activities through a reimbursable grant.
For many SMEs, the biggest challenge in export growth is not ambition. It is cost. Joining international trade fairs, attending trade investment missions, participating in export acceleration missions EAM, listing products in overseas retail outlets, or joining virtual trade events all require money before results come in. This is where the marketing development grant MDG, more accurately called the Market Development Grant, becomes valuable.
According to MATRADE, the MDG was introduced in 2002 with the objective of assisting exporters in promoting Malaysian made products or services globally. The lifetime limit is RM300,000, and reimbursement is subject to government fund availability. (matrade.gov.my)
What Is the Market Development Grant MDG?
The Market Development Grant MDG is a financial support facility created to help Malaysian exporters reduce the cost of export promotion. It does not work like a normal business loan. Instead, it is a reimbursable grant, which means eligible businesses pay for approved activities first and then submit claims for reimbursement based on MATRADE’s rules and required documents.
The grant is especially helpful for businesses that are ready to explore international trade opportunities but need support with promotional expenses. Whether a company sells food products, beauty products, industrial goods, professional services, technology solutions, or other Malaysia products, the MDG can help open doors to new buyers and overseas markets.
MATRADE states that the grant is specifically formulated for Malaysian SME companies, professional service providers, trade and industry associations, chambers of commerce professional bodies, and co-operatives. (matrade.gov.my)
